Proofreading and accuracy check

Proofreading is an essential part of high-quality text processing. A suitable proofreading method is determined depending on the type of a translated text and its subsequent use.

  • The initial proofreading of a document is carried out by the translator who reviews the translated text and performs a computerized grammar check.
  • QA (Quality Assurance) – The process consists of several, usually computer-assisted, checks that detect grammatical errors, non-translated sections of text, terminological inconsistencies (one term translated in different ways), non-conformity to required terminology, text format problems, etc. A QA check is carried out for every translation and is included in the price.
  • Basic proofreading – Performed as a standard service for all translations intended for the Czech market. In addition to QA, it includes a read-through check and a review of grammar.
  • Review by a second translator – An optional service that mainly consists of verifying the factual accuracy of the translated text by a second translator to ensure that the translation contains no factual errors. This proofreading service is very often requested by international clients.
  • Reverse translation – During this check, an independent translator translates a document back to the source text’s language. This way, the client is able to verify securely the accuracy of the translation even if the text is in a language the client does not know. This method is used for reviewing highly important documents, such as certain agreements or regulations pertaining to pharmaceutical products.
  • Specialized proofreading – A read-though check by a specialist (native speaker) in the applicable field. The objective is to ensure utmost terminological accuracy and to identify any factual discrepancies. This review is often carried out by the client’s expert (such as an employee of a branch in the target country) who usually has the right to modify the translated text. Specialized proofreading is typically carried out for manuals, handbooks, and technical texts intended for publishing.
  • Linguistic proofreading – A review of a translated text by a professional proofreader. The scope and degree of proofreading is determined by the customer and can range from a spelling, grammar, and layout check to a complete stylistic review.
  • Pre-production review – A check of an already proofed and typeset text carried out as the last step before printing. The objective is to eliminate any errors made during typesetting, such line breaks or incorrect drawing descriptions.
  • Proofreading and translation checks according to ČSN/EN 15038 – This standard defines in detail all requirements for translation services, ranging from the acceptance of orders, translators’ qualifications, accuracy checks, and proofreading to supplementary services and the management of translation projects. An obligatory part of translation jobs completed in accordance with ČSN/EN 15038 is a review by an independent translator.
